Sound production: A reed vibrates quickly against the mouthpiece, opening and closing the pipe hundreds of times a second.
First Invented: The saxophone was invented by the Belgian Adolphe Sax in Paris in the 1840s. He was trying to make a woodwind instrument that would have the projection of a brass instrument, in order to bridge the gap between the two sections in military bands. Sax also developed the modern bass clarinet.
